Observance of National HIV Testing Day at Lha Charitable Trust
On 27th June, Lha Charitable Trust prepared an awareness talk on HIV/AIDS for the adult students of the Lha language classes. Lha organized this event to educate students about HIV/AIDS in honor of National HIV Testing Day, celebrated every year on the 27th of June. The program involved the encouragement of HIV testing, and information on local opportunities to promote health.
There were more than 45 students who eagerly participated in the awareness talk and stayed afterwards to ask questions. Lha also distributed condoms and brochures on HIV/AIDS to support the educational messages described in the presentation. The materials were available with Tibetan, English and Hindi translations.
HIV/AIDS is a serious issue for Tibetans, both in Dharamsala and in other Tibetan settlements around India and Nepal. In order to reduce stigma associated with the disease, Lha is working hard to spread awareness and increase understanding of HIV/AIDS.
There are few other NGOs in Dharamsala raising awareness of HIV/AIDS, so Lha will continue to create more educational programs and activities for our community. Lha will also begin to focus on counseling opportunities for those living with, or newly diagnosed with, the disease.
We would like to extend our deepest appreciation to our volunteer Ellen Vermes, for giving the informative talk to our students, and to our Health and Environment officer Demay Tsering, for providing translations and answering questions. Lha thanks all of its supporters and volunteers who have contributed to this awareness project.
