On 18th October 2012, The children of Mewoen Tsuglak Petoen (model school*) School can finally reach turn on the tap and get clean drinking water now that representatives from Lha Charitable Trust have successfully installed a brand new water filtration system. The filter is an RO+UV+ UF and TTS, considered one of the best filtered water systems available in the area, and was provided by the US-based Himalaya Village Fund. It will provide more than 100 liters of clean and safe drinking water per hour to the students and their teachers and staff members.

The water is to be used not only for drinking but also for cooking, thereby improving the quality of food served at the school. Additionally, a water cooler providing instant hot and cold filtered water was installed with funds provided directly from Lha. We expect that these improvements will help to alleviate some of the waterborne illnesses children commonly suffer from in this region, especially during the monsoon season, and that it will contribute to maintaining a high level of general health among the students.

This is Lha’s third successful installation of its Clean Water Project in the Tibetan refugee community. We have more plans to install filters of this kind throughout the schools and monasteries in the McLeod Ganj area – especially those organizations whose funding does not currently provide for new development projects.  * The Department of Education of the CTA has established this school as a model school for the implementation of Basic Education Policy for Tibetans in exile on 10th October 2005. The school endeavors to follow and practise the policy not only for teaching-learning purposes but also to give holistic education to the children. It gives a lot of emphasis on imparting value education and traditional education. As stated in the BEP, teaching-learning up to class III is being done only in the mother tongue i.e. Tibetan language. Teaching-learning of second language starts when a child is in class IV.
