From February 2nd to 10th 2009 the Lha Charitable Trust offered a massage course to nine eager students, who had the opportunity to learn massage therapy from Adam O’Mara, an Australian massage therapist and health sciences student volunteering with Lha.

For seven days, these students had class for three hours a day, learning the basics of Remedial, Aromatherapy and Swedish massage. In addition to the practical massage knowledge gained, these students also learned about the trade procedures including draping, client interaction, professionalism, boundaries, written consent, the Health History Form, time constraints, therapist safety, and therapist intention.

“While the course did not educate them on essential oils or the countless possibilities of muscular skeletal pathology, it did give them a sound foundation in the massage sequence, techniques and a profession conduct expected at the highest level,” said O’Mara, reflecting on the course.

After the seven-day course, the students had to pass a practical examination to demonstrate the knowledge they had acquired throughout the course. O’Mara, was quite happy to report that “all students passed their practical exams with high distinctions.”

While this course does not qualify these students as professional massage therapists, the purpose of the course was to introduce these students to the basics of massage, so as to give them enough knowledge to decide if they would like to pursue massage training at a higher level.

“The students were respectful and presented an empathetic persona that is essential to this industry. I will miss them all and wish them the very best with their new found passion for massage,” said O’Mara after the course.

We hope to continue the Clear Vision program and the Dental project, dependent on funding, when the residents of McLeod Ganj return from the Kalachakra initiation in January 2012. We anticipate a resurgence of interest in the programs, and appreciate any donations.
