On the afternoon of January 18th, 2009, seven students from the Lha photography class held an exhibition of their work at the Lha Charitable Trust building on Temple Road in McLeod Ganj. Visitors were encouraged to come and experience the artistic accomplishments of the Lha’s third photography program.

Over the previous two weeks, seven Tibetan students had the opportunity to learn basic photography skills from Allison Domzalski, a freelance photographer based out of New York City. In only two short weeks, these students learned how to take beautiful pictures. They learned the basics of composition, lighting, framing, color, aperture, shutter speed, depth of field, white balance, and ISO – all the skills they will need to excel in photography. With the generous support of the Rowell Fund for Tibet, Lha was able to purchase five compact digital cameras (Nikon Coolpix L18) and one digital single lens reflex camera (Nikon D80), allowing the Lha students to get hands-on experience in the field of photography. Discussing her hopes for the future, Domzalski said, “With the progress I have seen in just a matter of weeks, I am confident that this community can continue to nurture and produce highly talented photographers. This is important for both the future of Tibetans and the awareness of the rest of the world about the Tibet situation.” As it continues to develop its photography program, the Lha Charitable Trust hopes to contribute to this vision.
