We began offering Chinese language classes at Lha in 2004. Due to a shortage of teachers for two years we could not offer these classes. Fortunately classes resumed in 2007 and have been progressing successfully since then. Currently we teach 35 to 40 students every month.
We have three different levels – Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced, each an hour-long class offered daily, Monday through Friday. We ask that Language Teachers at Lha commit to a minimum stay of two months, in order to ensure as much course continuity as possible for our students.
Teachers have access to a variety of teaching aids and materials through the Lha Library located in the main office building on Temple Road. Language Teachers at Lha are responsible for taking daily attendance, lesson planning, creating and grading homework and periodic exams for their students, and notifying the Teacher Coordinator in a timely manner should they be unable to attend their scheduled class.
Most of our Chinese language students are Tibetan, and many have a strong will to go back to Tibet. These days there is a strong demand for Chinese language skills among Tibetans in Tibet, as it offers greater opportunities for employment and in communication.
We recognize that the Chinese language is gaining in prominence globally; therefore many of our students regard it as important to know at least basic Chinese to communicate with the world.
