2016 Medical, Dental and Eye Care Programs
Once again, Lha Charitable Trust teamed up with Louisiana Himalaya Association for the 2017 medical, dental and eye care programs. This summer Dr. Suchin Shukla, our Medical Programs advisor, and 13 Louisiana State University Med Students, came to India to volunteer. For three weeks they did medical, dental, and eye assessments for 365 monks, nuns and Tibetan elders. 77% of those assessed needed glasses, dental work and/or medical care, a much greater number than we had expected. This discovery has led to the development of an effective plan for expanding our current programs that address these vital needs.
Our staff continues to foster and grow relationships with the local practitioners who perform the bulk of these needed services. We’ve now also enlisted the help of a second volunteer med student group along with two more professionals groups joining us from Louisiana, the Ochsner Medical Center and the “LMHPCO” Louisiana Mississippi Hospice and Palliative Care Organization.
Through this year’s Medical Assistance program 60 Tibetans received free medical care. The Clear Vision program provided free eye glasses for 102 while another 17 needed further eye treatments. Our Tibetan Smiles Dental program provided free dental care for 118 individuals; this included 228 cavities filled, 9 teeth pulled, 9 root canals performed, 8 X-Rays done, 4 bridges performed, 77 received teeth cleaning, 21 received dental related medicine & 4 people received dentures.
These three specific programs are managed by the staff of Lha Charitable Trust and funded through donations to the Louisiana Himalaya Association. If you would like to support the growth of one or all of these important projects please go to http://www.lhainfo.org/donate.html for donations within the USA or to http://www.lhasocialwork.org for donations within India.
